Maudie’s Lament
©Nikole Potulsky
Mama had me on a traveling train
We never slowed down
I never complained
I just waved goodbye, changed my name, and learned all the rules of the game
Chorus
Don't you cry
I can't always be strong
I ain't made out of steel, I'm made out of bone
and I break, I break, I break
Verse 2
I saw you with that woman on Saturday night
I didn't get jealous
She wasn't my type
But I'm sick to death of all your lies, I was born in the evening but it wasn't last night
Chorus
Don't you cry
I can't always be strong
I ain't made out of steel, I'm made out of bone
and I break, I break, I break
Verse 3
He said I want a strong woman who can cook and clean
Who is one part sweet and ten parts mean
Love me tender and never leave, I hope you don't think that woman was me
Chorus
Don't you cry
I can't always be strong
I ain't made out of steel, I'm made out of bone
and I break, I break, I break
Bridge
Now you don't need to run around on me
I’ll cut you loose, go on be free
I ain't blind, I clearly see your lies
Verse 4
We're slowing down
We've run out of gas
I can see you thinking
You better think fast —cause I'm packing up your sorry ass, right now
Chorus
I won't cry, you ain't that strong
You ain't made out of steel, you're made out of bone
and you'll break you'll break you'll break
you'll break you'll break you'll break
you will break

02 I Miss the Train
©Nikole Potulsky
Silver streak quit running when the coal mines all shut down
Coal dust left a shadow of lives lived underground
Rails didn’t rattle, all the pennies left in tact
Some folks started walking but most of them turned back
CHORUS
I miss the train, the way it made me feel
I miss the train, I’ll take rails over wheels
We used to ride, all the way to Tennessee
I miss the train, I miss the train
Verse 2
Peabody Coal put my town on the map
Left caverns of dead miners, never bothered looking back
Faulty equipment and we all know coal ain’t clean
But industry was calling needed fuel for new machines
Chorus
I miss the train, the way it made me feel
I miss the train, I’ll take rails over wheels
We used to ride, all the way to Natchez Trace
I miss the train, I miss the train
Verse 3
Frankfort lost her name when the train came west of town
Folks up on the hilltop packed their things and came on down
The streets were always bustling the union finally organized
The promise of the railroad kept America’s dream alive
Chorus
I miss the train, the way it made me feel
I miss the train, I’ll take rails over wheels
We used to ride, all the way to Tennessee
I miss the train, I miss the train
Bridge
Remember when they’re driving
All the work out of this land
The labor of our small towns
Made this country grand
Chorus
I miss the train, the way it made me feel
I miss the train, I’ll take rails over wheels
We used to ride, all the way to St Louis
I miss the train, I miss the train
I miss the train, I miss the train
Chorus
I miss the train, the way it made me feel
I miss the train, I’ll take rails over wheels
We used to ride, all the way to Tennessee
I miss the train, I miss the train
I miss the train, I miss the train

03 Get Out

Doors Closed
Alarm is on
House is empty
Everyone has gone
What you gonna do now?
What you gonna do now?
Verse 2
You hear them come
Up the stairs
You’re still screaming and
Nobody hears
The sirens stop
The house goes dark
You smell the smoke
You can feel the spark
Chorus
Get out. Get out
Get out. Get out
Kick and scream punch and shout
Get out. Get out. Get out
Verse 3
The sirens stop
The house goes dark
You smell the smoke
You can feel the spark
Can’t go home
Can’t go on
Can’t tell anyone
Don’t tell anyone
Chorus
Get out. Get out
Get out. Get out
Kick and scream punch and shout
Get out. Get out. Get out
Verse 4
No one asks and
you don’t tell
That you came here
From some kind of hell
What you gonna do now?
What you gonna do now?
What you gonna do now?

04 You Want to Know About Me
©Nikole Potulsky
I asked not to look so closely, so ghostly, at me
Just ask what you want to know about me
You want to know about me?
You want to know about me?
VERSE 1
Stop peeking thru my windows
Stop coming round my house
Anything you see here
I won’t talk with you about
You were right about last Sunday
You were right about last year
I don’t want to know
What you can see and you can hear
CHORUS
I asked not to look so closely, so ghostly, at me
Just ask what you want to know about me
You want to know about me?
You want to know about me?
VERSE 2
I am standing right before you
Covered up in scars
Burn marks on my hands
Trouble in my heart
So just stop it, let me be
Stop tearing me apart
There is nothing to see
This house has gone dark
CHORUS
I asked not to look so closely, so ghostly, at me
Just ask what you want to know about me
You want to know about me?
You want to know about me?

My Hometown

05 My Hometown
© Nikole Potulsky
I'm driving on a bridge between Illinois and Missouri
Looking at the stars to see how I've grown
Thinking about Texas should I move to New Orleans
Truth is I can't wait to get home
CHORUS
Skipping rocks on the river
Counting falling stars
Kids chasing around lighting bugs
Stuffing them in jars
Jam session on Sunday
Ya'll should come on down
There's nothing like passing life
Here in my hometown
VERSE 2
No I wasn't born here and I can't say that I'm raised
But I've got a pretty big mouth, o everybody knows my name
I can always find a cowboy to sing about lost dreams
There's a bartender south of town who's got a big old crush on me
CHORUS
Skipping rocks on the river
Counting falling stars
Kids chasing around lighting bugs
Stuffing them in jars
Jam session on Sunday
Ya'll should come on down
There's nothing like passing life
Here in my hometown
VERSE 3
It seems I've been looking for what was here all along
New friends and faces, new stories to put in songs
Sometimes I dream about the big city lights
But nothing shines like Missouri sky at night
CHORUS
Skipping rocks on the river
Counting falling stars
Kids chasing around lighting bugs
Stuffing them in jars
Jam session on Sunday
Ya'll should come on down
There's nothing like passing life
Here in my hometown
CHORUS
Skipping rocks on the river
Counting falling stars
Kids chasing around lighting bugs
Stuffing them in jars
Jam session on Sunday
Ya'll should come on down
There's nothing like passing life
Here in my hometown

06 If I were you
©Nikole Potulsky
You say you’re leaving
Saying goodbye
You’re sick of wasting your precious time
I’d leave too if I were you
VERSE 2
You keep the new car, I’ll keep the wreck
Judge says to give you, half of my paycheck
I’d take it too, if I were you
VERSE 3
I believe your diamond is paid in full
Wonder if that ring is pawnable
I’d pawn it too, if I were you
BRIDGE
You won’t believe this but my dog left me too
Neighbors were feeding him gourmet food
Engine blew right out of my truck my life’s a
Bad country song full of bad country luck
VERSE 4
You laughed at me like I’m a fool
At our auction buying back my tools
I’d laugh too, if I were you
VERSE 5
You say you’ve moved on
Found someone new
You keep real quiet about the hell you put me through
Honey I would too, if I were you
Yeah, I would too, if I were you
Oh you know, I would too, if I were you

Got the Rumble Seat rolled back
Hear the cold wind moan
I can see the train station
I can hear the whistle blow
VERSE 1
Outside of town we’ve got us a Marie Laveau
You can get your palm read. You can have your fortune told.
Me and the girls, we just gotta know
What’s coming next year, what's coming tomorrow
CHORUS
Got the Rumble Seat rolled back
Hear the cold wind moan
I can see the train station
I can hear the whistle blow
VERSE 2
Marie’s house wasn’t no hollow log
She didn’t have no one eyed cats, no three legged dogs
Outside was a pretty child playing in the yard
Said go on in, let my mama read your cards
CHORUS
Got the Rumble Seat rolled back
Hear the cold wind moan
I can see the train station
I can hear the whistle blow
VERSE 3
MaryJane, your future’s looking bleak
Your man is gonna leave you by the end of the week
Isabel, let me tell you girl, a change is coming real soon
that’s gonna rock your world
Then she looked at me leaned in, too close
Said come back tomorrow, come back alone
CHORUS
Got the Rumble Seat rolled back
Hear the cold wind moan
I can see the train station
I can hear the whistle blow
VERSE 4
By the time I saw the train, it was far too late
Those girls were in the air flying toward their fates
I started running from the dead on the railroad track
Got to Marie's house. she said I knew that you’d be back
CHORUS
Got the Rumble Seat rolled back
Hear the cold wind moan
I can see the train station
I can hear the whistle blow

08 What if you Don't
©Nikole Potulsky
You’re leaving tomorrow
But I don’t think you should go, no no no
I’ve got a truck, we can go to Canada
Take a train, down to Mexico
There are no guarantees in this life
I understand that, I’m not a fool
But I know if you don’t make it back
There’ll be no, getting over you
CHORUS
How did it end up this way?
I’m begging you don’t go
When are you coming back baby?
And what if you don’t?
What if you don’t?
VERSE 2
I’m afraid of what could happen to you
I’m afraid of the things they’re gonna make you do
You’ll never forgive yourself
I know this much is true
Did your orders say what this war is for?
It’s not peace we’re after
It’s still blood
It’s still oil
CHORUS
How did it end up this way?
I’m begging you don’t go
When are you coming back baby?
And what if you don’t?
What if you don’t?
What if you don’t?
VERSE 3
You’re leaving tomorrow
But I don’t think you should go, no no no
I’ve got a truck, we can go to Canada
Take a train, down to Mexico

Hello — goodbye, until the nurse came in
Baby mine, I dream of you all the time

There are no words for why you didn’t come home
Baby mine, I dream of you all of the time

10 Daddy’s Gone Home
©Nikole Potulsky
I rest my face in my tired hands
Lean on the shoulders of my closest friends
Put my faith into god’s great plan
My Daddy’s gone home
Oh my daddy went home too soon
A simple man who simply hung the moon
Buried his body this afternoon
My daddy’s gone home
CHORUS
Don’t weep no more
Child weep no more
The gates are open
Weep no more
VERSE 2
I go along with the preachers plan
Even though I’ll never understand
How he’s better off in the god’s great hands
My daddy’s gone home
I get control of what I should not say
Shake the hands and wipe the tears away
Keep it together through Amazing Grace
My daddy’s gone home
CHORUS
Don’t weep no more
Child weep no more
The gates are open
Weep no more
CHORUS
Don’t weep no more
Child weep no more
The gates are open
Weep no more

I’m going to the fair, gonna ride the ferris wheel
Sit on top of the world and see how that feels
I’ll be a simple girl from a southern town
You’ll be a rambling man who finally settles down
CHORUS
oooo
VERSE 2
We’ll drink a cherry coke, ride the bumper cars
Stay out too late and count the falling stars
Cotton candy kiss with the top rolled down
Head out of the county fair and drive back to our hometown
CHORUS
oooo
VERSE 3
I’m gonna fall in love just one last time
I’m gonna steal his heart and I’m gonna give him mine
When we’re old and gray, gonna smile real wise
Take a long look back, say thanks for the good life
CHORUS
oooo
